Two days ago, mega-bestselling author George RR Martin, best known for writing the Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels, joined the social networking site Twitter. Within 48 hours, he amassed more than 75 thousand followers, even though he only tweeted once.
Martin is notorious for taking years to write each book in his wildly popular series, has long avoided social networking sites, preferring to update his live journal page titled: Not A Blog.
In the lack of news from the author, fans have set up their own social networking profiles, using his name and providing humorous insights and fake spoilers about his upcoming books and the HBO series based on them. The most popular Twitter account in Martin's name is @_GRRM_ and has almost 40,000 followers, half as many as the author collected in two days time.
Twitter was abuzz the past two days with news of the author's official profile. With Game of Thrones season 4 finale airing on HBO this Sunday, fans are hoping the author will keep them updated about his progress with writing WINDS OF WINTER, the sixth book in the series that has been eagerly awaited for the past 5 years. Many people commented on the irony of the author's first tweet, which explains that he has joined Twitter, but doesn't intend to Tweet.
Well played, indeed!
